CIANJ: AI And The Future Of Hiring And Training The Workforce

AI and The Future Of Hiring and Training The Workforce

The proliferation of AI is forcing us to double down on the skills that cannot be automated away. These include judgement, communication, intellectual curiosity, and critical thinking. Good lawyering, and especially litigation (my practice), is more a function of gestalt than competency at rote tasks, so myopic focus on discrete “skills” is less important when it comes to hiring than a holistic evaluation of a candidate.

Our institutional goal for AI as an organization is to use it to burnish and radiate the strong work produced by our lawyers – not replace or outsource legal skills. Thus, by way of example, AI is extremely useful at proofreading and fixing mechanical errors in text, filling in gaps in research (by issue spotting and suggesting themes, trends, and topics), and quickly and efficiently synthesizing and presenting otherwise unwieldly amounts of information. All of this is impacted in one way or another by how AI chats are “prompted” (the language used to query a task from the AI), so we have invested in AI-adept tech trainers to teach attorneys and staff how to interface with out enterprise AI.
