The Law360 400: Tracking The Largest US Law Firms

Many of the largest law firms in the U.S. had a strong year in 2024, and as demand for their services ticked upward, they invested in bench strength, boosting the number of lawyers available to assist clients.

On average, the largest 400 firms in the U.S. increased their headcounts more in 2024 than the previous year as a robust market for legal services primed firms for growth. Overall the top 400 U.S. firms grew more than 3% in 2024, a jump from the previous year’s 2% as many firms focused on strategic lateral hires and some looked for tie-ups to boost their ranks.

More law firms were on the hunt to combine as a strategy to speed growth — with a near-record number of law firm mergers and acquisitions occurring over the course of 2024. 2025 looks to be a strong year for law firm tie-ups as well — as firms look for ways to boost their offerings and secure top clients.

The Law360 400 features the largest U.S.-based law firms and international firms with a U.S. component as measured by domestic attorney headcount.
