Robert represents lenders in connection with the financing of commercial real estate, including the construction and development of hotels, resorts, condominium projects, and multi-family, office, retail and mixed-use developments. His practice spans fee and leasehold structures in both mortgage and mezzanine loan settings, including acquisition loans, pre-development loans, construction loans, bridge and permanent financings, tax-credit based financings, preferred equity investments, secured lines of credit, loan warehousing facilities, loan-on-loan financings, master repurchase transactions, intercreditor and co-lender structures, loan acquisitions and sales, syndications and participations, and loan restructurings, workouts and discounted payoffs.
Prior to practicing law, Robert was an economist in Washington, DC, where he worked for the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, the Board on Radiation Effects Research at the National Academy of Sciences, a Department of Energy / Navy joint enterprise, and a public-private economic research institute.
Robert is a graduate of the University of Chicago (A.B.) and Cornell University (J.D.), and is currently pursuing a masters degree in interdisciplinary studies at the University of Chicago. He has a strong facility for languages, and prides himself on being able to express complex technical and legal concepts in concise and understandable terms.
Robert has a deep understanding of commercial banking and lending laws, teaches continuing legal education courses across a range of commercial real estate topics from due diligence review to advanced financing structures, and is admitted to practice in Illinois, New York and New Jersey.
