Gordon Duus is chairman of the firm's Environmental Law Department. He has spent the past 25 years counseling clients entering real estate or commercial transactions on how to manage risks created by environmental laws. He joined the firm as a member in 1990.

Mr. Duus has extensive experience handling matters involving the federal Superfund law, New Jersey's Industrial Site Recovery Act, underground storage tank laws and other laws requiring the cleanup of contaminated property.  He has obtained brownfields approvals that allowed clients to obtain state funds to pay for the cleanup of their properties.  He has obtained environmental insurance policies for over 100 properties, usually as part of an effort to help a transaction proceed to closing.

Mr. Duus advises clients who have paid or are paying for the remediation of contaminated property on how to avoid incurring cleanup costs or to recover those costs from other parties that are responsible for the contamination.

Mr. Duus also advises developers of industrial, commercial and residential real estate on how to obtain the permits necessary to develop in regulated areas, such as wetlands, floodplains and coastal areas.

Noteworthy

Mr. Duus has been named an expert witness in several environmental lawsuits and has been appointed by the New Jersey Superior Court to act as environmental counsel for a custodial receiver.

Mr. Duus has lectured regularly on environmental law issues before such organizations as Cook College of Rutgers University and the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Mr. Duus has been awarded an AV rating, the highest rating available, for his professionalism and the quality of his legal work from Martindale-Hubbell, the premier directory of legal professionals.  He has been selected by his peers as a New Jersey Super Lawyer in Environmental Law.
